Phonics

At Newlands Spring Primary and Nursery School we recognise just how important the development of early reading is.

To help children make the best progress they can, we use the Little Wandle: Letters and Sounds Revised programme. Little Wandle is a government approved system for systematically helping children to develop the decoding skills needed to become fluent and confident readers. Our aim is to ensure children make the best start in becoming life long readers.

There are numerous useful videos and other resources on the Little Wandle website.

The videos below show how we say our sounds.

Tricky Words

'Tricky words' are words that can't easily be sounded out (decoded). This is because some of the sounds in the words are spelled in an unusual way.  Children will sometimes bring home tricky words to practise.  You can find out more about how to support the children with these here.

Early Reading

In Reception, Year 1 and Year 2, we use Collins Big Cat for Little Wandle books. These decodable books feature an exciting mix of stories and non-fiction to foster a love of reading in all children, matched to the Little Wandle progression.  These books are read 3 times a week in school with an adult, before coming home for you to practise with them.

To promote a love of reading, the children will also choose and bring home a sharing book each week.

Further details of our approach to Phonics and Early Reading are summarised in this document:
